Our History
Lauri Ann Lumby, is the founder and spiritual director for The Order of the Magdalene. Inspired by ancient monastic traditions, the Order of the Magdalene provides psychological and spiritual formation through which members are supported in becoming self-actualized. Beyond individual formation, members are further supported through regular spiritual services, community gatherings, and group spiritual formation.
The Order of the Magdalene arose out of Lauri’s yearning for a contemplative life and finding no way to live that out in a form that fit her beliefs, temperament, and lifestyle. In her search, Lauri discovered many like her who felt called to a contemplative lifestyle, but one that was free from the trappings of religious doctrine, and the strict requirements of traditional monasticism. Out of this exploration and self-reflection, the Order of the Magdalene was born.
While inspired by the oneness teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, the Order of the Magdalene is open to people of all beliefs, or no beliefs. All that is required is an openness to self-knowledge, ongoing personal development, and a commitment to being a source of compassion in the world.

The order is named for Mary, called Magdalene, the one among Jesus’ apostles who most fully grasped the universal application of his teachings and who was first ordained by Jesus to continue and fulfill his mission of compassion in the world. The mission of the Magdalene, as inspired by her teacher, was not to create a new religion, but to support humanity in finding its way to compassion and love through self-awareness and personal development. The Order of the Magdalene continues that mission.
As a virtual monastic community, the Order of the Magdalene serves the needs of a diverse and global population through online formation, classes, one-on-one mentoring, spiritual services, and community gatherings.
