Her Mouth is Full of Magic

Her mouth is full of magic.

Words of power.

Vibrational medicine.

Shattering illusions.

Piercing veils.

Tearing away the masks that hide the Truth.

Welcome by some.

Shunned by many.

Celebrated by those with nothing to hide.

Abhorred by the duplicitous.

Curious to those who yearn to know their Soul.

She need not even speak

nor make a sound.

Her very presence a sword of Truth.

Footprints like earthquakes

Shaking off the weak

while revealing the strong.

From her light no one can hide.

Her darkness sheltering truths newly known

and that which is too tender for the world.

Her mouth is full of magic.

Her gaze the dawning of a new world.

Her heart the love that abides there.

Her touch bringing comfort.

Her listening the soil for your revelation.

Seek her and you too will be found.

Leaving the Dying World Behind

I’m writing this at 7:46 on a Monday morning and I’ve already received three text messages from friends who are dreading returning to their dying world jobs. It is taking everything in them to put on their shoes and drag their bodies to a job that is not life-giving and that seems to be sucking the soul right out of them.

They aren’t alone! They are also not wrong in feeling these feelings.

The world as we have known it is dying. System after system is in its own form of collapse. Whether it be healthcare, education, governance, or the old boy corporate world, they have outlived their usefulness and are no longer effectively meeting the needs of the people they claim to serve.

Workers are feeling it. They are feeling the death of the hierarchical/patriarchal model, along with their Soul’s calling to be part of bringing forth something new. The status quo no longer works – and it hasn’t for a very long time.  We know this and if we’re dreading going to work, it likely means we are meant to be part of the change.

Being part of the change is easier said than done (says the woman who was forced out of the Church because she dared to take Jesus’ commandments to heal and serve seriously). Also, being part of the change does not happen overnight. Further, some are called to be that change from within the institutions they serve, but for many this is becoming increasingly difficult.

Building the new begins with self-knowledge. Who am I – really?  What are my gifts and passions?  What fulfills me and gives my life a sense of meaning and purpose? These are the questions we must ask ourselves (and discover their answers) before we can a) leave the dying behind and b) set out for something new. Yes, we can leave that sucky job, but until we know the answer to these questions, we’ll likely step from one frying pan into the fire.

As we are coming to know ourselves, we can begin to look out for and make choices on behalf of our Soul.  We might undertake training or education in the work that is more in alignment with our true gifts and passions.  We might take up a hobby related to our interests. We might volunteer.  As we move more and more in the direction of our Soul, the Universe conspires on our behalf, sending people, opportunities, and resources to help us deepen our knowledge and develop our skills, readying us for the big decision: should I stay or should I go?

Leaving the dying world behind is never easy. For many, the biggest obstacle is the perceived security of dying world jobs, and the salary and benefits that some provide. For others, it is the comfort of the status quo – “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.” It is rarely an easy decision to leave what we know behind for something that might be life-giving, but may or may not provide for our needs.  It is a risk that few are willing to take – and truly – many are unable – and that is ok. However, if you find your dying world job becoming increasingly dreadful, it may just be that you are being called to leave behind the dying world and be part of building something new.

What part of the new world would you like to help build?

Feeling Numb? You’re Not Alone!

Numb. Slow. Unmotivated. Paralyzed. Uninspired. Despairing. Blank. Grey. Depressed. Sad.  These are the words people have been using to describe how they are currently feeling. It seems we are experiencing a collective numbness, the likes of which no one (in my generation at least) has ever experienced.

We are suffering from what I’m going to call PPTSD:  Post Pandemic Traumatic Stress Disorder.  We might also call it:  Post Political Traumatic Stress Disorder because it seems that literally everything has become a political issue over which people are  choosing to argue, fight, and divide.

For the past three years (I might argue since 2016), we have been bombarded with one violent event after another: contentious elections, school shootings, insurrections, a pandemic that some decided to make political, the rising cost of housing, inflation, “supply chain issues,” “food shortages,” global warming/climate change, the whole world on fire, war in Ukraine, the threat of violence from China, etc. etc. etc. The bombardment has been CONSTANT.  Every minute of every day we are getting pummeled by one threat after another. It’s exhausting.

No human was meant to experience this kind of constant external assault.  We were not wired for this. If you happen to be sensitive, an empath and/or healer, the effect has been even more profound. And there is no sign of things lightening up. Until the current system is done with its dying (for what we are really witnessing is the death of an empire and any system built on a similar foundation of fear, power, oppression, and control), the writhing and screaming will continue.

We have a right to feel numb, unmotivated, paralyzed, uninspired, etc.  We were not made for this kind of constant, collective trauma – especially one of this nature over which it seems we have no control.

The old world is dying and dying it must. We cannot save it.  Neither should we try. That does not mean, however, that there isn’t SOMETHING WE CAN DO! As the current world, rooted in fear, power, oppression, and control is dying, a new world IS being born to take its place:

See, I am doing a new thing!

Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

Isaiah 43: 19a

A new world is being born among us, and we are the ones who have been quietly and stealthily building it. It is being born out of our unwillingness to submit to the status quo. It is being born out of our inherent sense of value and refusing to work in conditions or for pay that doesn’t reflect that value. It’s being born out of our love for the planet and our decisions to treat her more lovingly through our buying and growing decisions. It’s being born out of our care and concern for our children, and out of our hope for their future. It’s being born out of the generation of young people paving a new path to self-sufficiency through the creation of innovative business ventures. It’s being born out of those who have untied themselves from societal/religious/institutional conditioning, discovering their own truth, and living from that truth freely.

While we cannot escape the trauma of the dying world in its death throes, perhaps we can find hope in the new world that is being born, and inspiration for how we might begin or deepen our participation in its creation.

A World On Fire

We are living through what may be the greatest lesson humanity will ever have to undertake. Together as a species we have succeeded in bringing ourselves close to our own extinction through our abuse of the environment and the destruction of our planet. This impending doom was shown to me through a childhood dream. The images and message of that dream have never left me. We are the ones who will decide our fate. Will we come together in support of radical reform (much of it not so radical) that will heal our planet and therefore ourselves, or will we continue on the current path and watch ourselves die? No matter what “they” say, the choice is up to us. What will you choose?

The Moon on Fire

A childhood dream of

the moon aflame.

Harbinger of doom,

this isn’t a game.

Heralding the end

of a world gone wrong.

Calling the child

with fire and song.

“Gather your friends

to find ancient bones.

Restoring them rightful

to their proper home.

The bones of the man

long since dead

and the immortal words

he once said:

‘Of…..By……and For….

All who dwell here,

no more allowed those

ruling by fear.’

If you succeed in

the task we give

the world won’t die

but surely will live.”

I’ve Grown Weary of Men Who Only Watch

I love men. I love men a lot!  Some of my favorite humans (most especially my son) are of the male species. I love them so much sometimes that it hurts. The hurt, however, is not for lack of love. Instead, it is the deep hurt I feel when I see some (perhaps many) men failing to participate in a world that deeply needs their strength, courage, and most especially their voice.

First I want to say THANK YOU to the men I know and see who stand up in the face of injustice, who risk criticism and condemnation for speaking/living/expressing their truth, who defend the rights of women and children, and who risk certain loss for defending the rights of the disenfranchised. I want to thank those who have risked life, limb, status, and their own welfare for doing what is right, even when they know it might certainly mean having to turn in “the man card.” Thank you Thank you Thank you too all these good men who are working hard to support the betterment of our world.

WE NEED MANY, MANY MORE LIKE YOU!

Which brings me to the difficult words. While these good men are doing good things in the world, there are far too few of them. If we ever hope for the patriarchal/hierarchical/fear/power/oppression/control machine to turn around, we desperately need the men to stand up, speak out, and take action. White men especially, for the simple reason that the only way to turn this thing around is for those for whom it was built and for those who most benefit to stand up and say,

“THIS IS WRONG!  THIS ISN’T WORKING. TOO MANY ARE SUFFERING FOR THE SAKE OF THE FEW.”

Then they need to do something about it.

I’ve grown weary of men who only watch as women, children, and the disenfranchised and discriminated against weep, and cry, and wail for the suffering brought forth in our world by a few powerful men.  I’ve grown tired of giving my voice to a cause only to watch my words fall on deaf ears. I’m exhausted from caring about the world and those who are suffering in it because of the actions of greedy, gluttonous, prideful men and their complicit women, and wondering, while I’m caring, if anyone else cares. Do people even see all that has gone wrong in our world or has blindness become a defense mechanism as the whole world is turning to shit?  It is too painful to watch and too overwhelming to even begin to do something about it?

Those of us who have been the eyes, the voice, the heart for our dying world are exhausted. This is why we need MEN to stand up and do something more than just watch!

Sidenote: I know my words won’t make a difference. I just needed to speak it and say it so those who share these feelings know they aren’t alone. Thank you sisters and all the good men who are seeing, speaking, and acting on behalf of the healing and transformation of our dying world.

I Can’t

A HUGE thank you from my dear friend and soul-brother, Christian Borchardt, for this contribution to the outcry over the overturning of Roe vs. Wade. Chris says he wrote this as he found himself overcome with rage while reading his Sunday paper. Chris’ outrage is a terrific reminder that the overturning of RvW is a WE issue and that men too have a place in this conversation. Thank you Chris! I’m sooooooo grateful for you!

I can’t add nor remove anything

from MY body

Because YOU say

I can’t.

I can’t afford your food

I can’t afford your shelter

I can’t afford you – being you

By the way

Who are you –

Really, let me know

But

I can

Vote

Discern

and Judge

By the people, for the people, and

The overturning of Roe Vs. Wade is yet another symptom, among many, of an empire in collapse.

We cannot halt the empire’s collapse, neither should we try. A system that was built on fear, power, oppression, and control, is inherently unsustainable. It is time for that system to fall away so that a new system might be born from the ash.

In the meantime – how are we to survive an empire facing its own demise?

Betrayed

I am writing this just 45 minutes after the news was released that Roe Vs. Wade was overturned by the United States Supreme Court.

There are no words.

Disgusted. Sick. Angry.  All come to mind, but this only scratches the surface of the reality behind this ruling:

The American people have been betrayed by our government – in the Supreme Court and everywhere else where women have been deprived of sovereignty over their own bodies. In a nation that proudly waves the banner of representative democracy where the majority of the population consider themselves pro-choice, these decisions are nothing short of betrayal – and demonstrate an epic failure of governance.

The US can no longer call itself a representative democracy.

Yes, this is just another nail in the coffin of a nation fast hurtling toward its self-created demise, but as a woman and as a mother of two young adults, and an auntie to many, this nail is especially painful.

I feel gutted.

I know I’m not alone. In the short time since the Supreme Court decision came down, my phone and social media have been screaming.  Women are angry. Men who care about women should be too. What immediately followed were Clarence Thomas’ vision of a future where both contraception and same sex marriage are illegal (I truly despise this man and have since the Anita Hill thing).  The actions of the vocal minority will not stop at abortion.  Mark my words.

In this moment I don’t have energy to think about appropriate social action. All I can do right now is tend to my grief. Writing is one way I give my grief a voice. Social media is another. There aren’t enough Handmaid’s Tale memes for how many are feeling today.

I can also be a source of support for others.  As a Soul Tender, with a master’s in Transpersonal Psychology, and just darn good listener without judgment, I’m a good place for people to express all that comes forth in the face of betrayal:

  • Shock.
  • Denial (this can’t be happening)
  • Bargaining (maybe more states will come forward with appropriate protections, maybe a new amendment can be written to protect women’s rights)
  • Depression (feelings of helplessness, despair, immobility)
  • RAGE RAGE RAGE (where I am right now)
  • Sorrow.  (interesting, I found myself weeping in yoga this morning not really knowing why…..now I know).

I’m available via FB messenger and email lauri@lauriannlumby.com and text for those who have my private number.

Finally, in case anyone should forget:

THIS IS NOT JUST A WOMEN’S ISSUE

I’ve been saying this all along:  in a nation that seems to cater to white men, these are the ones who need to speak out and stand up.  Clearly the US Government doesn’t give a shit about women, people of color, or the poor (who will be most devastated by this ruling). Sadly, it has been proved that our voices don’t matter. The good men need to stand up and make their “brothers” hear. If they don’t, they might find that they will be the ones the vocal minority will be coming after next.

The Waiting

On just this side of the Solstice portal, we find ourselves in a time of waiting. We have cleared the spent stalks of our former lives and prepared the soil. The seeds of the new have been planted.  Our dreams are beginning to take root and we may be able to just glimpse the sprouts of the new emerging from their home in the soil. It is not yet time to enjoy the fruits of our labors as the harvest has not yet come.  So now we wait.

This time of waiting is appropriate.  While we have made ourselves ready for the new world through all that we have done for ourselves, there remains a world around us that is not yet done with its dying.  Instead, we wait with bated breath teetering on the edge of democracy – will it die (some would suggest it’s already dead) or will it be rescued from the brink of its self-created demise?  This is a difficult time not only for the U.S., but for all other countries who claim democracy as their form of governance as democracy itself is being tested.  Will it survive or collapse under the weight of the corruption that has been allowed to overtake a vision that once dared to suggest a government:  of the people, by the people, for the people.  The coming weeks will be the test of what we’ve been told to believe is freedom.

But is it? Has it ever been? As long as humanity suffers for the sake of a powerful few, we are not free.  As long as humanity lacks the very things needed to support life – access to quality water, food, clothing, shelter, and safety, we are not free.  If the very things we need to thrive as a species – quality education, healthcare, meaningful work at a sustainable wage, are only available to the wealthy few, we are not free.  As the past two-hundred years have proved, democracy, as it’s been experienced in the U.S. anyway, does not guarantee freedom. If we were truly a government of the people, by the people, for the people, we would not be experiencing the great divide between those who have and those who have not, and legislation would benefit the common good instead of the powerful few.

It’s appropriate that democracy is being tested. It is long past time that the nations of this world who wave the flag of democracy take a good hard look at what they truly stand for. The same is true for us.  Beyond what we are observing “out there,” in a world on the edge of its own collapse, we are being asked how we define freedom and how we are creating it in our own lives.  True freedom is not defined by the external circumstances of our lives, but by a deep inner experience of contentment and joy – filled and flowing with love. How are we creating this in our lives?

We’ve done the first steps in clearing that which is no longer life-giving. We’ve planted the seeds of the new. Now is the time to wait and watch – looking for the weeds of the old that might creep in to strangle the sprouts of the new we have envisioned.  As we wait, we might discover that we have planted some of our seeds too closely and that we need to weed out the excess or give them a new home. As we wait, we might find that some of our seeds need additional support or that we have tears to shed from the dying old that we can use to water them. Waiting is not a fallow time.  Instead, it is a time to deepen and strengthen our vision, ensuring that what is coming forth is rooted, anchored, and bearing the abundant fruits of love.
